I am an artist because…

Some thoughts about the nature of an artist – on New Years Day.
In this blog post, writer Christian Mihai, gives an inside view of the mindset of the artist. You may be surprised at his response to this question.
What is an artist?
How do you know what an artist is?

Cristian Mihai

There’s a part of me that believes art to be a primordial aspect of the human condition. Art inspires, art is a way of achieving greatness, of building a better world. Art turns strangers into friends. Without art, without artists, we wouldn’t be ourselves anymore.

Because I feel that within the confines of any artistic form of expression, we allow ourselves to wear a mask. The artist hides behind words or paints or brushes. And he feels safe. He can be anyone he wants to be. His freedom is limitless. And he plays this bizarre game of hide and seek with the rest of the world, constantly changing the rules, until he decides – maybe on a mere subconscious level – to  be himself, thinking that people will never find out.

Yes, I think you nailed it.
Finding our true inner voice can take many years.
We have to go through so many changes over the years, in learning our craft and learning to listen to the still voice inside of us – but eventually, it happens and we sing out loud through our work. I love your pottery so much. After I lost my sight in 2007, it was pottery that gave me back my voice – I was a painter and fiber artist – and a colleague invited me to come to a pottery studio and begin working again. At the time I thought my art life was over but the clay in my hands brought it all back to me. My hands remembered how to feel the clay and I was on my way to healing because of that. Thank you for visiting my blog today. I plan to read Iots more from you this year. Glad I found your blog!

I agree with you Lynda. I feel like part of our life’s journey is to find our true inner voice and purpose. Such a beautiful challenge with many rewards. Your story about finding clay and being a gateway back to creativity and art for you makes me love the medium even more. What a beautiful and inspiring story! I am grateful we connected and can not wait to hear more about your journey and the amazing things you will undoubtedly be up too 😉
